Connected Thinking in Action: How NIS Contributes to and Learns from Global Insurance Associations

What's in this article

At NIS, we believe innovation doesn’t happen in isolation. The best ideas are forged in collaboration with the people and organisations driving our industry forward. That’s why Elliott Draga, our Chief Commercial Officer, is actively involved in leading and collaborating with insurance associations worldwide, contributing technological perspectives while learning from peers and regulators who shape the global market.

Associations We Support

  • Travel Health Insurance Association of Canada (THIA)
As THIA’s President, Elliott plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of travel health insurance in Canada. He leads a dedicated board of directors and volunteer base, helping foster strong relationships with regulators, supporting industry-wide compliance, and inspiring the next generation of travel insurance leaders.

Elliott has been a THIA member since 2015, was a founding member of the THIA Innovation Lab, and has served on the board since 2022 (Vice President 2022-2024, President 2025-present).

  • U.S. Travel Insurance Association (USTIA)
On the USTIA Board of Directors, Elliott brings a dual mandate: representing THIA in maintaining the strong Canada–US travel relationship and providing a technological perspective to help the US travel insurance market evolve with innovation, automation, and customer-first solutions.
  • Other Industry Groups
NIS also supports and participates in the Global Assistance & Medical Transport Institute (GAMTI), the North American Pet Health Insurance Association (NAPHIA), and the Travel Risk & Incident Prevention Group (TRIP), broadening our perspective across assistance, pet, and travel risk markets.

What Contribution Involves

While each association has its own priorities, some common themes run throughout Elliott’s contributions:

  • Elevating technology – placing AI, fraud prevention, and open APIs at the forefront of industry conversation.
  • Supporting missions – aligning with association goals while showing how technology can be an enabler.
  • Sharing insight – providing real-world examples of how insurers are scaling operations, managing risk, and improving customer experience with digital tools.

Feeding Insights Back Into NIS

Being at the heart of these conversations also helps NIS stay ahead of change. As Elliott explains:
“We pride ourselves on sitting at the nexus of technology and specialty insurance. By immersing ourselves in the industries we serve, we gain unparalleled access to the expertise of peers, regulators, and innovators. These insights help us refine our platforms, anticipate customer needs, and continue delivering technology that empowers insurers globally.”
