The insurance industry is in the midst of a digital transformation, and the companies that thrive will be those that embrace innovation. In a recent interview with the International Travel & Health Insurance Journal (ITIJ), Elliott Draga, Chief Commercial Officer at Nordic Insurance Software (NIS), spoke about technology trends, post-pandemic changes in travel insurance, and why innovation equals success.
Innovation at NIS
Draga shared that NIS is investing heavily in its technology stack, from modern frameworks like TypeScript, React and GraphQL to a full transition toward cloud-native applications. The result? Faster product launches, stronger global security compliance, and a platform that empowers insurers to fully automate claims processes and expand into new markets.
“We have invested heavily in rebuilding our core products… Behind the scenes our products are built using modern technologies, and we are continuing to transition to a fully cloud-native application suite,” Draga explained to ITIJ.
This reflects NIS’s ongoing commitment to delivering configurable, end-to-end platforms for policy, claims, and case management.
How the Pandemic Reshaped Travel Insurance
The pandemic accelerated the adoption of technologies such as chatbots, AI/ML, and automation, which Draga notes will continue to help insurers offset rising costs and labour shortages. New entrants into the global travel insurance market are also driving competition and innovation, ultimately benefiting customers with smarter, more accessible products.
Canada’s Evolving Travel Insurance Market
Reflecting on the Canadian market, Draga pointed to the surge in trip cancellation claims during the pandemic, followed by a strong rebound in travel demand. Today, AI, parametric insurance, and big data are shaping how Canadian insurers respond to customer needs, underscoring the role of technology as a growth driver.
Connected Thinking in Action
At NIS, this focus on innovation aligns with our philosophy of Connected Thinking: bringing together policy, claims, and assistance operations into one configurable, API-first platform. For clients, that means:
- Rapid product launches in multiple geographies.
- Automated claims management and case visibility.
- The agility to scale in step with customer demand.
Industry Leadership and THiA
Beyond his role at NIS, Draga also serves on the board of the Travel Health Insurance Association of Canada (THiA). He emphasized the importance of THiA’s annual conference in uniting insurers, TPAs, and partners to shape the future of the travel insurance industry.
